Food-Grade Plastic vs Glass Bottles for Oils and Spices: Which Is Better?

You've chosen a quality cold-pressed oil. You've picked organic spices. But here's a question most people never think to ask: does the container it comes in affect what's inside?

The answer is yes — more than most people realise.

Why Packaging Matters for Edible Oils and Spices

Oils and spices are sensitive to three things: light, heat, and chemical interaction with their container. The wrong packaging accelerates oxidation, degrades nutrients, and in some cases allows compounds from the container itself to migrate into the food.

This is especially relevant for cold-pressed oils, which retain more natural compounds than refined oils — and are therefore more reactive to their environment.

Food-Grade Plastic: What It Means and What It Doesn't

"Food-grade" means a plastic has been approved for contact with food under normal conditions. It does not mean the plastic is inert under all conditions.

The most common concern is with plastics that contain BPA (bisphenol A) or similar compounds, which can leach into food — particularly oils and fatty foods — especially when exposed to heat, UV light, or over time as the plastic ages.

Even BPA-free plastics are not without concern. Some studies suggest that alternative plasticisers used in BPA-free products may have similar effects, though research is ongoing.

For cold-pressed oils specifically, plastic containers present a few practical issues:

  • Light permeability — most plastics allow some UV light through, which accelerates oxidation
  • Chemical interaction — oils are fat-soluble, meaning they can absorb trace compounds from plastic over time
  • Heat sensitivity — if a plastic bottle is left in a warm environment (a delivery vehicle, a sunny kitchen shelf), leaching risk increases

Glass: The Neutral Choice

Glass is chemically inert — it does not react with food, does not leach compounds, and does not degrade over time. It also blocks UV light when tinted (amber or dark green glass provides the best protection).

For cold-pressed oils and raw honey, glass is the superior storage material because:

  • It preserves the natural compounds in the oil without chemical interference
  • It doesn't absorb odours or flavours
  • It can be reused and recycled without degradation
  • It gives you a clear view of the product — cloudiness, colour, and texture are visible indicators of quality

What About Spices?

Spices are less reactive than oils but still benefit from proper packaging. The key concerns are:

  • Moisture ingress — plastic seals can degrade over time, allowing humidity in
  • Light exposure — UV light degrades volatile compounds responsible for aroma and potency
  • Airtightness — once opened, how well does the container reseal?

Airtight glass jars with tight-fitting lids are ideal for long-term spice storage. If your spices come in plastic, transferring them to glass jars at home is a simple upgrade that meaningfully extends their potency.

Practical Guidance for Your Kitchen

  • For oils: prioritise glass bottles, stored away from direct light and heat. Never leave oil in a plastic bottle on a sunny windowsill or near the stove.
  • For honey: glass is strongly preferred. Our Tulsi Honey is best stored in its original glass jar, away from heat.
  • For spices: transfer to airtight glass jars if they arrive in plastic. Store in a cool, dark cupboard — not above the stove where heat and steam accelerate degradation.
  • For ghee: our A2 Gir Cow Ghee is best kept in a glass or ceramic container, away from direct sunlight.

The Bottom Line

Food-grade plastic is safe under standard conditions, but glass is the better long-term choice for oils, honey, and spices — particularly premium, cold-pressed, or raw products where preserving natural compounds matters.

When you invest in quality ingredients, it's worth storing them in a way that protects that quality all the way to the plate.
