10 Foods That Look Healthy But Aren't (And What to Eat Instead)

Some of the most popular "health foods" on supermarket shelves are anything but.

They have the right packaging, the right buzzwords, and the right price point to feel like a good choice. But turn them around and read the ingredients, and a very different picture emerges.

Here are 10 foods that regularly fool well-intentioned shoppers — and what to reach for instead.

1. Multigrain Bread

"Multigrain" simply means the bread contains more than one type of grain. It says nothing about whether those grains are whole, refined, or how much of each is actually present. Most multigrain breads are made primarily from refined white flour with token amounts of other grains added for marketing purposes.

Swap to: Stone-ground whole grain flour and make rotis or flatbreads at home using our Khapli Wheat Flour — genuinely whole grain, nothing removed.

2. Flavoured Yoghurt

Plain yoghurt is a genuinely nutritious food. Flavoured yoghurt is often a dessert in disguise — loaded with added sugar, artificial flavours, and thickeners that have nothing to do with fermentation or gut health.

Swap to: Plain yoghurt with a drizzle of our Tulsi Honey for natural sweetness.

3. Packaged Fruit Juice

Even 100% fruit juice concentrates a large amount of sugar into a small volume while removing most of the fibre that makes whole fruit beneficial. Many "fruit drinks" contain as little as 10% actual juice, with the rest being water, sugar, and flavouring.

Swap to: Our Natural Lemon Ginger Squash or Aam Panna Squash — made from real fruit, without artificial colours or preservatives.

4. Granola and Granola Bars

Granola is marketed as a wholesome breakfast but is typically held together with significant amounts of sugar, honey, or syrup, and often contains refined oils and artificial flavours. Granola bars are frequently closer to confectionery than health food.

Swap to: A handful of our 7 Super Seed Mix — real seeds, no binding agents, no added sugar.

5. Vegetable Chips

The word "vegetable" does a lot of heavy lifting on these packets. Most vegetable chips are made from potato starch or refined flour with vegetable powder added for colour, then deep-fried in refined oil. The vegetable content is often minimal.

Swap to: Roasted seeds or nuts — our Kashmiri Mamra Almonds or Konkan Cashews make genuinely satisfying snacks.

6. Low-Fat Salad Dressings

When fat is removed from a dressing, flavour goes with it. To compensate, manufacturers add sugar, modified starch, and artificial flavours. The "low-fat" version often has more sugar than the regular version.

Swap to: A simple dressing made with our Cold Pressed Sesame Oil and lemon — real fat, real flavour, nothing added.

7. Instant Oats with Flavouring

Plain oats are a genuinely good food. Instant flavoured oats are a different product — pre-sweetened, often with added salt, artificial flavours, and a glycemic index significantly higher than rolled or steel-cut oats due to the processing.

Swap to: Plain oats cooked with our Tulsi Honey and a spoonful of our A2 Gir Cow Ghee for genuine nourishment.

8. Sports and Energy Drinks

Unless you're running a marathon, most people have no need for the sugar load in a sports drink. They typically contain as much sugar as a soft drink, plus artificial colours and electrolytes in quantities that are irrelevant for everyday activity.

Swap to: Coconut water, or our Natural Thandai Squash diluted with cold water — naturally refreshing without the sugar spike.

9. Protein Bars

Most commercial protein bars are essentially chocolate bars with added protein powder — held together with sugar syrups, artificial sweeteners, and a long list of additives. The protein content is real; everything around it often isn't.

Swap to: A small handful of our Dry Fruits Combo — almonds, walnuts, and cashews provide protein, healthy fats, and genuine satiety with zero processing.

10. Refined Cooking Oils Labelled "Light"

"Light" olive oil or "light" vegetable oil refers to colour and flavour, not calorie content. These are still refined oils, processed using heat and chemical solvents, with the same caloric density as any other oil — just fewer nutrients.

Swap to: Our Cold Pressed Groundnut Oil or Cold Pressed Coconut Oil — genuinely light on processing, full on nutrition.

The Pattern Worth Noticing

Almost every food on this list follows the same formula: take something real, process it heavily, remove what makes it nutritious, add back flavour and texture artificially, then market the result as healthy.

The antidote is simple: choose foods with short, recognisable ingredient lists. The fewer steps between the farm and your plate, the better.

At Sohamna Organics, that's the only standard we work to.
